Taking Linked Notes within OneNote

Learn about taking Linked Notes within OneNote.

Using Linked Notes allows you to dock OneNote to a side of your screen so you can work within other applications on the other side.  This gives you the capability to automatically link your notes to what you’re looking at.  Linked Notes works with Internet Explorer, Word 2016, PowerPoint 2016 and other OneNote 2016 pages.  Below are the instructions for taking linked notes within OneNote.

Taking Linked Notes within OneNote Using Internet Explorer —
  1. Navigate to the Command Bar within Internet Explorer and click the OneNote Linked Notes icon.
  2. OneNote opens in a sidebar and the Select Location in OneNote dialog box opens.
  3. Choose the notebook and location for the new page or select an existing page.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Once you start typing your notes, a Microsoft OneNote dialog box opens. This is a notification that Linked Note Taking is running when OneNote is docked.  Click OK to close the dialog box.Taking Linked Notes with OneNote
  6. As you are typing your notes during the linked session, OneNote stores a thumbnail image and a link to the web page so you can return to it later.
  7. Linked Notes Options — Click the Linked icon to select the various linked notes options:
    • Linked Files – Access the linked files.
    • Delete Link(s) on This Page – Select and delete individual links or all links on the page.
    • Stop Taking Linked Notes – Turn off Linked Notes feature.
    • Linked Notes Options – Navigate to the OneNote Options, Advanced section to set options for Linked Notes.
Taking Linked Notes within OneNote Using Word 2016 –
  1. Navigate to the Review tab.
  2. Click Linked Notes in the OneNote group.
  3. OneNote opens in a sidebar and the Select Location in OneNote dialog box opens.
  4. Choose the notebook and location for the new page or select an existing page.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Once you start typing your notes, a Microsoft OneNote dialog box opens. This is a notification that Linked Note Taking is running when OneNote is docked.  Click OK to close the dialog box. Taking Linked Notes with OneNote
  7. As you are typing your notes during the linked session, OneNote stores a thumbnail image and a link to the document so you can return to it later.
  8. Linked Notes Options — Click the Linked icon to select the various linked notes options:
    • Linked Files – Access the linked files.
    • Delete Link(s) on This Page – Select and delete individual links or all links on the page.

Taking Linked Notes within OneNote Using PowerPoint 2016 –
  • Navigate to the Review tab in PowerPoint.
  • Click Linked Notes in the OneNote group.
  • OneNote opens in a sidebar and the Select Location in OneNote dialog box opens.
  • Choose the notebook and location for the new page or select an existing page.
  • Click OK.
