Excel Charts

Learn how to create and modify Excel charts.

Charts allow you to visually convey the complex data contained within your Excel spreadsheets and workbooks in an uncomplicated manner.  They allow you to pull together large amounts of data a pinpoint the most important aspects without lengthy explanations.  They are a great way to “sum up” the information held within your Excel files.  Below are the step-by-step instructions for creating a Pie Charts.  However, you can take the information you learn and use it to create any of the types of Excel charts.

Creating a Pie Chart
  1. Select the data to use for your chart.VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 1
  2. Click the Insert tab.
  3. Select the Insert Pie or Donut Chart icon from the Charts group.VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 2
  4. Select the type of chart you need.VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 3
  5. Click the icons to the right of the chart to add finishing touches: VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 4
  • Chart Elements – Used to show, hid, or format elements such as the axis title or data labels.
  • Chart Styles – Used to quickly change the color or style of the chart.
  • Chart Filters – Used to show or hide data in your chart.
Adding a Title to a Chart

When you create a chart, a Chart Title box appears above the Chart. VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 5

  1. Click the Chart Title box and type the title.
  2. Press Enter to add another line to the title.
  3. Click outside the Chart Title box to complete it.
Moving a Title on a Chart
  1. Click the Chart Elements button next to the upper right corner of the chart. VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 6
  2. Click the arrow to the right of Chart Title and click Centered Overlay or More Options for additional options. VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 7
  3. The title can also be moved by clicking the title and dragging it to a new location.
Formatting a Title on a Chart
  1. Right-click on the title.

  3. Make sure it is listing Title Options if not, click the down arrow and select Title Options. VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 9
  4. Choose the formatting options you want from a – Fill & Line, b – Effects, and c – Size & Properties. VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 10
  5. Click the X to close and accept your changes.
Adding Data Labels to a Chart

Data labels make a chart easier to understand because they show details about a data series or its individual data points.

  1. Click the data series or chart.  Note:  To label one data point, after clicking the series, click that specific data point.
  2. Click Chart Elements, in the upper right corner next to the chart.

  4. To change the location, click the arrow next to Data Labels and choose an option. VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 12
  5. For this example, we’ll choose Best Fit.
Changing What is Displayed in the Data Labels
  1. Right-click the data series or data label.

  4. Select the options you need from a – Fill & Line, b – Effects, c – Size & Properties and d – Label Options. VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 15
  5. Click X to close and accept your changes.
Changing the Text Displayed in the Data Labels
  1. Click the data label containing the text to be modified.
  2. Click the label again so it is the only data label selected.

  4. OR Select the existing text and type the replacement text. VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 17
  5. Click anywhere outside the data label to accept your change.

 

Changing the Color or Style of the Chart Using the Chart Styles Option
  1. Click the chart.
  2. Click Chart Styles, in the upper right corner next to the chart. VLBTechEd Excel Pie Chart Image 18

  6. Click outside the chart to close the options and accept your changes.

 

You now have the skill set necessary to create and stylize a Pie Chart within Excel.  You can take this information and apply it to the many different types of charts available within Excel.
