Word templates allow you to create professional looking documents to be used over and over for new documents. Templates allow you to keep your documents looking consistent while saving you time. When creating templates, you set up the styles, formatting, and any necessary wording you need so you don’t have to do these steps each time you create a certain type of document. For example, if you send out business letters on a regular basis, you can set up a template containing all the necessary information and formatting so all you need to do is access it when needed and type in your details. Below are the step by step instructions for creating Word Templates from existing documents.
Creating Word Templates from Documents
- Open the document you wish to use to create the template.
- Modify the document as needed for use as the template.
- Once you have all the necessary changes made, you will need to save the document as a template.
- Click the File tab and click Save As.
- Navigate to the right column in the Save As window and enter a name for the template. For this example, we will use Business Letter.
- Click the down arrow to the right of the document type (*.docx) and choose Word Template (*.dotx). Note: If your document contains macros you will need to use the Word Macro-Enable Template (*.dotm) document type.
- Click Save once the information in filled in. Note: Once you select the document type of template, the save location is set for you.
- The document is then saved as the named template. You can now click File and Close to close out of the template.
Using Your Newly Created Word Template
Once you are finished creating your Word Template and have saved it, it becomes available for use.
- Click File.
- Click New.
- Click Personal to navigate to your Personal templates.
- Double-click on the template you wish to use. For this example, we’re using the Business Letter.
- The template will open. You can now create your new document based off the template.
- Once you have completed the document, you can save it as a document (.docx).
